Current happenings, and notes from last night

  • OCCV members have recently published two letters to the editor of the Herald Journal:
  • ICE has now abducted six people from Cache Valley, including some who are providers for their families. Use our contact page if you'd like to donate to help these families. We will put you in touch with the Migrant Support/Raices group.
  • Equality Utah has launched a petition to preserve Harvey Milk Boulevard
  • You can now report ADA accessibility issues around Logan. This is also linked from the Resources and Action Groups pages.
  • A new group, BURRN is working to educate Utah voters about the ongoing effort to repeal Proposition 4 (Better Boundaries).
    • The repeal effort is trying to get an initiative on the ballot to eliminate the independent redistricting commission, established by Utah voters in 2018 and illegally embattled ever since. They're hiring out-of-state signature gatherers, paying them in dark money, and allowing them to use misleading and coercive tactics to get signatures (if you don't believe it, just walk past the guys on USU campus).
    • This is a transparently pro-gerrymandering effort, but many signers don't realize that. With a month left to collect signatures and 42k/140k collected, there's a real chance that the repeal effort could fail.
    • We can make a big difference by standing next to signature gatherers with a sign that reminds passersby to think, and actually read, before signing. For those already duped, remind them of their right to withdraw their signature.
  • The Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) keeps Utah judges fair and accountable. Check their website to assess judges who are on the ballot. Only six states have a program like this!
    • After a two-hour training, you can volunteer to evaluate judges.
    • 1-2 observations per month, 1-2 hours per observation.
    • If you have to travel far, you'll be reimbursed.
    • Virtual observations are allowed.
  • As always, check the Events page for upcoming meetings, presentations, rallies, etc.
