Our vigilance needed to protect Better Boundaries TOMORROW

Politicians have suddenly launched yet another attempt to undo Proposition 4 (the Better Boundaries initiative). We have a narrow window this Saturday, Oct 25, in which to act.

What's going on?

They've filed an "indirect initiative", which, if passed, would grant the Utah legislature the power to repeal Prop 4. Unlike a direct initiative, which goes straight to the ballot, an indirect initiative is first presented to the legislature. Whereas we collected 512,000 signatures to secure fair voting districts back in 2018, this measure would require only 70,400 signatures to enshrine lawmakers' right to gerrymander.

What can we do?

The sponsors have until Nov 15 to hold seven hearings before they can gather signatures. Of course they're having them all with minimal notice, and none of them will be in Salt Lake County! That means it's extra important that we show up in Logan.

  1. Obviously don't sign their petitions. And spread the word: protectutahvoters.com
  2. Show up tomorrow (Logan Library, 4pm) and listen carefully for any misstep. Remember Amendment D? It would have given legislators unfettered authority to amend or repeal voter initiatives. It failed because they broke the rules: misleading summary on the ballot, insufficient notice, etc. Here are the rules. Report any violations to info@utconsitution.org, or pass them on to OurCommunity/email them to Nancy.
  3. Respectfully express disapproval.
